I Came Around in Circles
Art has the power to transcend time, place, and language. It tells stories, preserves culture, and gives voice to individuals whose narratives may otherwise remain unheard. One of the most profound ways artists can communicate their stories is through the creation of artist books, a medium that blends visual art with the written word. I Came Around in Circles, a new artist book that captures the life and work of emerging artist Wendy, whose journey in painting began in 2018 but whose connection to her culture and stories stretches back millennia.
Wendy's Story: A Snapshot of Strength and Resilience
Wendy's artistic journey began only a few years ago with Juluwarlu, but her connection to the land and her culture goes far deeper. In her short career as a painter, Wendy's work has gained significant recognition, with her paintings exhibited in prominent events like the Sydney Biennale (2024), and she was named a finalist in the 2023 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA). Her art was also featured in Tracks We Share at the Art Gallery of Western Australia (2022), and it is now included in several national collections. Despite her relatively short time as a painter, Wendy’s work carries the weight of a lifetime of stories, some of which have been passed down for over 2,000 generations.
The artist book I Came Around in Circles provides a unique opportunity to glimpse into Wendy's world, her culture, and her art. This publication serves as a testament to her journey and her connection to Country, as well as her commitment to sharing her stories with future generations. With the support of Juluwarlu, Wendy embarked on the creation of this book, asking for help to record her story. The project was made possible through a Creative Australia Project grant, and thanks to the collaboration of writer and philanthropist Jan, designer Block Branding, and the team at Walk Through Walls, Wendy’s vision has come to life.
Wendy’s Journey: From Vision to Reality
The creation of this book was a labor of love, involving the collaborative efforts of Wendy, the Juluwarlu team, and several creative partners. Wendy, in particular, worked closely with writer Jan to ensure her story was told in her own words. She even flew to work directly with the designers at Block Branding, making sure the visual presentation of the book was as powerful as the stories it contains.
In Wendy’s case, I Came Around in Circles is not just a book but an experience. It’s a portal into her artistic practice, her life, and the ancient stories that inform her work.
Through this book, Wendy shares her personal reflections in two essays, offering readers a glimpse into her life, her culture, and her relationship with her art. These writings are complemented by an essay from respected artist, curator, and educator Nici Cumpston, who sheds light on the significance of Wendy's work. The book also includes a personal reflection from Michael Woodley, a co-founder of Juluwarlu, senior Yindjibarndi leader, and Birdarra law holder, who discusses Wendy’s impact on the community.
